The role of a nurse leader can be demanding and challenging in today's rapidly changing environment. In this seminar, we examine strategic thinking issues and applications you need to effectively adapt within this environment.

  • Describe strategy from the perspective of leadership, and discuss how it applies to the various roles you may play.
  • Consider how your particular role and values impact your leadership in an organizational context.
  • Using a case study, conduct an analysis of a leader's challenge when it comes to responding to dynamic changes within an organization.
  • Assess potential gaps between an individual's role and changing organizational needs.
  • Discuss strategies to effectively address changes in organizational direction and needs versus one's existing role.

Janet Balke, PhD, MBA, MHA, BSN, RN

Capella University

Balke received her BSN (1981) from the University of Kansas, her MBA and MHA from the University of Houston (1999), and her PhD from Capella University (2006). Balke's dissertation topic was "Nurse Executives: A Grounded Theory Study of Dynamic Competencies.” She has practiced nursing in a variety of settings, including surgical/trauma ICU, oncology, home health, and hospice. Her roles include staff nurse, unit manager, and administrator. She has been a health care consultant since 1994, focusing on nursing and health care executive competencies, strategic business development, and related topics. She serves on the board of a large medical practice foundation in Houston, Texas.
