Barbara Schreiner, PhD, RN, CDE, BC-ADM, CPLP
Core faculty
Capella University

Schreiner joined Capella in 2008 as an adjunct faculty member and became a core faculty member in 2010. Schreiner has a master's degree in nursing from the University of Florida, where she also minored in adult education. She has a PhD in education from Capella University, where she specialized in training and performance improvement. She holds a board certification in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM), is a Certified Professional in Learning and Performance (CPLP) and is a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). With more than 35 years as a nurse, clinical nurse specialist, and diabetes educator and researcher, she has seen the positive impact leadership can have in the health care field.

Mary Bemker, DSN, PsyS, RN
Director of the Nursing Department
Capella University

Bemker joined Capella in 1999 and was named director of the nursing department in 2011. She has an MS in education from Indiana University as well as an MSN and doctor of science in nursing from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her health care experience has spanned decades and includes multiple health care settings and roles—she has worked as a charge nurse in psychiatric intensive care, originated and directed a counseling and development program for a Fortune 500 company, managed nurses in the emergency room, and led a nonprofit agency serving high-risk youth and adolescents.

Lonnie Wederski, PhD, MBA, RN
Faculty chairman
Capella University

Wederski joined Capella in 2004 as an adjunct instructor. Since that time, he has served as a dissertation mentor, dissertation committee chairman and faculty chairman, and he has been a core faculty member since 2008. Prior to joining Capella, Wederski worked as a registered nurse in burn trauma and as a psychiatry clinician and administrator, and opened an independent inpatient center for women with eating disorders. His MBA is from the University of Phoenix, and he received his PhD from Walden University. He served as the executive director of a residential treatment center for abused and neglected children and served as chairman of Capella’s Faculty Review Panel. He also served as a primary subject matter expert in the development of Capella’s Master of Health Administration and Doctor of Health Administration programs.

Janet Balke, PhD, MBA, MHA, BSN, RN
Adjunct faculty
Capella University

Balke received her BSN (1981) from the University of Kansas, her MBA and MHA from the University of Houston (1999), and her PhD from Capella University (2006). Balke's dissertation topic was "Nurse Executives: A Grounded Theory Study of Dynamic Competencies.” She has practiced nursing in a variety of settings, including surgical/trauma ICU, oncology, home health, and hospice. Her roles include staff nurse, unit manager, and administrator. She has been a health care consultant since 1994, focusing on nursing and health care executive competencies, strategic business development, and related topics. She serves on the board of a large medical practice foundation in Houston, Texas.

Lydia Forsythe, PhD, MA, MSN, RN, CNOR
Adjunct faculty
Capella University

Forsythe is an accomplished health care executive, researcher, and faculty member with more than 20 years of experience in diverse clinical and administrative roles. She is the president of Londes Strategic Healthcare Consulting. She graduated with both a PhD and an MA from the Fielding Graduate University, an MSN from the University of Phoenix, and a BA from Marquette University. Forsythe is active in nursing education, with experience as a nursing program coordinator, researcher, instructor/faculty member, and program evaluator for CCNE.
